Electricity and Natural Gas

Electricity and Natural Gas are provided by Manitoba Hydro. You may need to have the electricity or gas reconnected (A fee may be charged.) or you may simply need to change the billing to your name. There is a Manitoba Hydro Office at 389 Main Street in Arborg.

All housing has electrical service. Some homes are heated with electric furnaces.

Some homes are heated with natural gas furnaces and have kitchen stoves or water heaters that use natural gas.

Water and Sewer

In Arborg, water and sewer service is provided by the town.
Drinking water is treated and safe to drink. Sewer and water are installed in all housing.
You will receive a bill in the mail every 3 months.

In Riverton, sewer service is available. Water is your own responsibility. 

Call the town/village office for problems with provided services outside the home.

In rural areas, both water and sewer are your own responsibility.
Water may be from a well.
You can check with the Agriculture Office to test the quality of the water.

Sewage is normally contained in a septic tank and a septic field or a holding tank. A septic service can clean out the septic tank once a year and a holding tank more often.

Garbage Disposal

Garbage is picked up in the morning once a week from all houses and apartment buildings in Arborg and Riverton. There is no charge for garbage pick up.

  • Tuesday: businesses and houses east of Main Street in Arborg
  • Wednesday: all houses and some businesses in Riverton
  • Friday: businesses and houses west of Main Street in Arborg
  • Saturday: some businesses in Riverton

Garbage must be in garbage bags. Any branches must be in bundles.

Garbage dumps are located outside town for disposal of large items or large quantities of waste and for people who live in the R.M. of Armstrong and R.M. of Bifrost

Recycling

Blue Box recycling is available for newspapers, magazines, cardboard, jars, metal cans and plastic bottles and jugs.

In the towns of Arborg and Riverton, recycling is picked up in a blue box at the end of your driveway. Recycling pick up is a free service.

If you live in the rural area, you can take your recycling to the Riverdale Place Workshop and place it in the marked drop off bins.

Pets and Animals

Pet animals are allowed in town. These include cats, dogs or other small animals. Dogs need to be licensed at the town/village office after they have a rabies vaccine from the veterinarian. Each household can have a maximum of 2 cats and 2 dogs.  

On rural property, pets and all domesticated farm animals are allowed (horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, sheep, goats etc.). Some exotic animals such as llamas, ostriches etc. are also allowed. Large animal numbers per acre may be restricted.

Veterinarians provide small and large animal care. There are also grooming services.

You can wash clothes for a small charge if you don’t own a clothes washer and dryer.

Newspapers

The Interlake Spectator is the local newspaper and is printed every Friday. You can pick up a free copy of The Interlake Spectator from distribution boxes located outside by:

The daily papers can be ordered and delivered to your home or you can buy them from a store in Arborg or Riverton. They are printed every day.
