Telephone / Internet Service

Basic telephone service in Manitoba is supplied by MTS (Manitoba Telecom Services/ MTS Allstream Inc.). You can buy a phone from a store or you can rent a phone from MTS. After you find a place to live, you can apply for basic phone service, cell phone service, and internet at the: 

  • MTS Store (TDM Sports), 279 Main Street, Arborg, 376-2320

To apply, you will need two pieces of identification.

Fees or Charges

An installation fee is charged for a home phone (land line) to receive your own telephone number. An activation fee and system access fees are charged to receive your own cell phone number. These fees will be included on your first MTS bill along with the first month’s service fee. Internet installation is provided free by MTS.

Your Phone / Internet Bill

You will receive a bill every month from MTS with charges for the different services you receive. You can use a different company for your long distance calls, cell phone or internet and then you will receive a separate bill from that company. You can pay your MTS bill by mail, at your bank, through internet banking, or at any MTS phone centre. You can set up automatic monthly payments.

Calling Long Distance

A long distance call is a call made to communities outside our local calling area. The free local calling area from Arborg includes the towns of Gimli, Riverton, Fisher Branch, Vidir, Fraserwood, Poplarfield, Hecla, Pine Dock and Bloodvein. For residents of Riverton, calls to Fisher Branch and Fraserwood are long distance. There is information in the front of the telephone book on long distance telephone calls.

Save Money on Long Distance Calls

There are different long distance services in Manitoba. If you don’t make a lot of long distance calls each month, basic MTS service should be good enough. If you do make a lot of long distance calls you can often save money by signing up for special long distance plans offered by MTS and other companies. It is best to ask companies about their rates before choosing one.

  • Directory Assistance: Dial 411 to find a phone number even if it is not listed in the telephone book. There is a small fee for this service.
